for us, and for our children after us

Tēnā koe

Welcome to mokomoko! We provide stock images of Māori for iwi, business and education.

We provide positive images of Māori and their place in the modern world - as business people, academics, professionals and educators.

By providing the resources to show Māori in a positive light, we hope that we raise the profile of Māori, and normalise the perception of Māori as professionals today and into  the future.

    Our tikanga

    • We identify our models by iwi, so you know where the people are from.
    • We pay our models residuals - most stock image sites pay the photographer only, but we think it's important to give those in the photos ongoing recognition.
    • We identify places that we photograph - it's important that you know where these places are, and we pay residuals to iwi on these in recognition of their whenua.
    • Where there are images of pou, we have permission from iwi to use these images, and pay residuals to iwi on these in recognition of their tupuna.
    • We don't stock pictures of marae or urupā . If you need images of these, then we suggest you contact the marae directly to arrange permission. The best place to find contacts is here:  Māori Maps

    Want to work with us?

We'd love to have your photos here. Your photos need to be high quality JPG and we need model and property releases for all images. It's easy - send us a message and we'll come back to you with what you need to do.

    Why mokomoko?

we're called mokomoko for two reasons - firstly because we wanted a Māori name which is easy for everyone to remember and spell, and secondly, because Moira (Kāi Tahu) who founded mokomoko, has a thing for lizards.

mokomoko is written in lower case so as not to be confused with Mokomoko of Te Whakatōhea who was hanged in 1866.
